Department of Botany
Overview
The Deccan region serves as a unique semi-arid laboratory for interdisciplinary research in Botany, offering vast potential in dry land medicinal flora, biodiversity, chemical ecology, ethnomedicine, and climate-resilient agriculture. The Department of Plant Science thus aims to advance postgraduate education and research in these areas. Through rigorous teaching, innovation, and community engagement, the department seeks to bridge traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches to address challenges in healthcare, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable agriculture with a focus on geobotanical adaptations of xerophytic plants, pharmacological exploration of ethnomedicinal resources, rhizosphere microbiology, and identification of drought-resilient crop traits in wild relatives of millets and pigeon pea. With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and translational research, the department aspires to become a vibrant center of academic excellence, scientific innovation, and socially relevant scholarship.
