Prof. Bharat Kumar is an accomplished academic and researcher currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Physics, Central University of Karnataka (CUK). With a Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru, he has built a strong foundation in soft condensed matter physics and related areas of materials science. Over the years, he has progressed through roles including DST-INSPIRE Faculty at IIT Kanpur and Assistant Professor at CUK, and he also gained international postdoctoral experience at the University of South Carolina, reflecting both national and global academic engagement.
His research focuses on soft condensed matter, particularly the electrical and interfacial properties of lipid membranes, liquid crystals, peptides, and self-assembled systems. He has led and contributed to multiple funded research projects supported by agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), VGST, and ANRF (earlier SERB), securing substantial grants for innovative investigations into biomembranes, antimicrobial peptides, protein conformation and azobenzene molecules. With an extensive publication record in reputed international journals—including Physical Review E, Langmuir, Soft Matter, and Nanotechnology—he has consistently contributed to advancing understanding in interfacial phenomena and nanoscale electrical characterization. His work bridges fundamental physics with biologically relevant systems, demonstrating both depth and interdisciplinary relevance. He has supervised Ph.D. scholars to completion and continues to mentor research students. His contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards like a national Bronze Medal from the Indian Liquid Crystal Society.
Beyond research, Prof. Bharat Kumar has played academic administrative roles of Dean of the School of Physical Sciences and Head of the Department of Physics.
